SILVERFINEART I Interview - AdoreNoir Magazin 2013

FEATURED - Ina Forstinger & Gerald Berghammer

We started to take pictures about 8 years ago. Gerald was abroad many times for professional reasons and our travels took us to wonderful places again and again. The experience captured was the reason to start with photography. Originally, we started with Digital Photography, but at that time there were still great qualitative restrictions and thus we started to work exclusively analog. When someone dedicates, like us, the whole spare time and also the related travel exclusively to photography, it is not possible to do this together. Any relationship would survive this permanently. Gerald is responsible for the shooting with the large format camera, while I am in charge mainly of medium format and panoramic. Nevertheless, we always take a look at the camera settings of each other. In almost all situations, it is necessary anyway to work together. After a long journey, it is wonderful to see the first negatives in the darkroom over and over again. We have no way to take a look at the images or the results on-site. It might happen that we go to the darkroom even the same day of the return.
It is beautiful to change the "landscape" according to our wishes even with the help of various photographic stylization ways and to obtain the desired result through specific exposure and development. We both feel, at least photographically, better in the north than in the south. Even when the cold can often be very hard for a long time, the north of Europe compensates that with wonderful landscapes. Contrastingly, Dubai and Venice were also very impressive.
As we have visited exclusively Europe at least analog until now, we are still available for 4 other continents. We are expected to begin in the United States. But also Japan is at the top on our list. Ansel Adams was a great "teacher" from the beginning. There is not much literature available regarding the analog photography and, at least in Austria, it is not easy to find someone today who can share his/her knowledge about analog photography. We are currently working on an exhibition in Vienna and another in Berlin. Photographically, we are expected to travel to the U.S. as the next step. Everything else will be seen.
