THE SELECTION was a solo exhibition by Austrian fine art photographer Gerald Berghammer, presented by SILVERFINEART at Bildraum 01 in Vienna, Austria, from 6 December 2017 to 19 January 2018. The exhibition explored minimalist black-and-white fine art photography and the curatorial decisions that influence how photographic works are selected, presented and appreciated within the international art market.
At the heart of the exhibition was an examination of artistic selection and the relationship between photographers and galleries. Bringing together photographs chosen by international gallery professionals and works selected by SILVERFINEART, THE SELECTION offered different perspectives on artistic quality, individual interpretation and the significance of limited-edition fine art photography.
Berghammer's photographs reflected his distinctive approach to visual reduction, carefully balanced compositions and precise tonal control. Created through traditional analogue photographic techniques and long exposures, atmospheric landscapes, architectural subjects and urban environments were transformed into quiet, contemplative compositions. The interplay of light, form and negative space revealed a photographic language defined by stillness, clarity and timeless simplicity.
An accompanying artist talk on 17 January 2018 extended the exhibition's exploration of photographic art, curatorial practice and gallery representation. THE SELECTION marked an important milestone in Berghammer's international exhibition history, connecting his artistic practice with a broader discussion of photographic quality, artistic independence and the cultural value of fine art photography.
