Tree in the Courtyard – Paris, France | Gerald Berghammer

TREE IN THE COURTYARD – PARIS, FRANCE | GERALD BERGHAMMER
Tree in the Courtyard is a black-and-white fine art photograph by Austrian photographer Gerald Berghammer, created in Paris, France, depicting a solitary tree framed by the symmetrical architecture of a historic Parisian courtyard and viewed through a shadowed passageway. The composition transforms an understated urban scene into a carefully structured study of architecture, nature and negative space.

The strong contrast between the dark interior foreground and the luminous courtyard beyond creates depth and directs the eye towards the tree at the centre of the composition. Symmetrical doorways, stone walls and classical architectural elements form a precise geometric framework, while the organic shape of the tree introduces a quiet counterpoint to the surrounding built environment. The restrained monochrome treatment emphasises tonal balance, texture and spatial clarity, giving the photograph a calm and timeless character.

Combining architectural photography, urban landscape and Gerald Berghammer’s minimalist approach to black-and-white fine art, Tree in the Courtyard presents Paris through reduction, symmetry and stillness rather than through a recognisable landmark. Its refined tonal range, balanced composition and quiet atmosphere make the work particularly suited to contemporary, minimalist and architecturally focused interiors, as well as to collectors of Paris photography, black-and-white architectural photography, urban fine art and contemporary European photography.

THE ARTIST
Gerald Berghammer is an Austrian fine art photographer and the winner of multiple international awards. His work is distinguished by a clear, timeless visual language—reduced compositions, monochrome motifs, and long exposures that distil light, atmosphere, and quiet tension into precise, contemplative images. At once restrained and emotionally resonant, Berghammer’s photographs balance silence and structure, inviting a slower way of seeing.

At the centre of his practice is minimalist landscape photography. Horizons dissolve into haze, water becomes a soft plane of tone, and lines and textures emerge as subtle anchors within open space. By stripping the motif down to its essentials, Berghammer shifts attention to nuance: gradients, surfaces, transitions, and the fragile boundary between presence and absence. The resulting works do not aim to describe a place, but to evoke a state—an encounter with atmosphere, time, and stillness.

Berghammer works with both analogue and digital processes, selecting the medium that best serves each subject and the intended tonal character. Long exposure is a defining artistic tool, transforming fleeting weather and light into condensed, minimal forms. This rigorous reduction lends his images their distinctive calm and graphic clarity, allowing them to resonate in contemporary exhibition contexts as well as in architectural and interior settings.

For collectors and for interior and project-based applications, Gerald Berghammer offers professionally produced, museum-quality fine art prints in strictly limited editions. The works are made to archival standards and are suitable for private and commercial spaces—from homes and offices to hospitality, corporate, and architectural projects.

ANALOGUE PHOTOGRAPH / BLACK-AND-WHITE ONLY
Gerald Berghammer uses analogue film cameras in medium, panoramic and large formats to create his distinctive photographs. For his analogue work, he uses black-and-white negative film in 6×6 cm, 6×7 cm, 6×17 cm, and 4×5-inch formats. He develops the negatives himself in his own darkroom. Only the negatives that meet his exacting quality standards are selected for inclusion in his portfolio.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY / BLACK-AND-WHITE AND COLOUR
For digital black-and-white and colour photography, Gerald uses a medium-format camera. Only digital medium format meets his exacting standards, enabling him to produce large-scale artworks without having to compromise on the finest details in the image. The precise tonal gradations are another major advantage.
