ROCKY PEAKS STUDY 1 – SPAIN | GERALD BERGHAMMER
Rocky Peaks Study 1 by Austrian fine art photographer Gerald Berghammer is a minimalist black-and-white seascape photograph captured using long exposure, depicting five rugged sea stacks rising from the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Spain. The jagged rock formations stand in striking contrast to the smooth, mist-like water and expansive open sky, creating a carefully balanced composition defined by sculptural forms, negative space and a profound sense of stillness.Through the prolonged exposure, the movement of the Atlantic Ocean is softened into an almost seamless surface, drawing attention to the weathered textures and distinctive silhouettes of the isolated rocks. Berghammer’s restrained monochrome treatment emphasises the interplay of light, shadow and natural geometry, while the simplicity of the composition gives the coastal landscape an atmosphere of quiet permanence.
Combining minimalist fine art photography with the dramatic character of Spain’s Atlantic coastline, this limited-edition photograph offers a timeless interpretation of the relationship between rock, sea and open space. Its refined tonal structure and understated elegance make it particularly suited to contemporary interiors, minimalist living spaces and collectors of black-and-white fine art photography.

Gerald Berghammer is an Austrian fine art photographer and the winner of multiple international awards. His work is distinguished by a clear, timeless visual language—reduced compositions, monochrome motifs, and long exposures that distil light, atmosphere, and quiet tension into precise, contemplative images. At once restrained and emotionally resonant, Berghammer’s photographs balance silence and structure, inviting a slower way of seeing. At the centre of his practice is minimalist landscape photography. Horizons dissolve into haze, water becomes a soft plane of tone, and lines and textures emerge as subtle anchors within open space. By stripping the motif down to its essentials, Berghammer shifts attention to nuance: gradients, surfaces, transitions, and the fragile boundary between presence and absence. The resulting works do not aim to describe a place, but to evoke a state—an encounter with atmosphere, time, and stillness.
Berghammer works with both analogue and digital processes, selecting the medium that best serves each subject and the intended tonal character. Long exposure is a defining artistic tool, transforming fleeting weather and light into condensed, minimal forms. This rigorous reduction lends his images their distinctive calm and graphic clarity, allowing them to resonate in contemporary exhibition contexts as well as in architectural and interior settings.
For collectors and for interior and project-based applications, Gerald Berghammer offers professionally produced, museum-quality fine art prints in strictly limited editions. The works are made to archival standards and are suitable for private and commercial spaces—from homes and offices to hospitality, corporate, and architectural projects.

For his analogue work, he uses black-and-white negative film in 6×6 cm, 6×7 cm, 6×17 cm, and 4×5-inch formats. He develops the negatives himself in his own darkroom. Only the negatives that meet his exacting quality standards are selected for inclusion in his portfolio.DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY / BLACK-AND-WHITE AND COLOUR
For digital black-and-white and colour photography, Gerald uses a medium-format camera. Only digital medium format meets his exacting standards, enabling him to produce large-scale artworks without having to compromise on the finest details in the image. The precise tonal gradations are another major advantage. -
