Minimalist Madeira Landscapes in Limited Editions
Gerald Berghammer’s Madeira photographs explore the dramatic Atlantic landscapes of the Portuguese island through a restrained contemporary visual language. Ancient Laurisilva forests, mist-covered mountain ridges, volcanic rock formations, rugged coastlines and solitary trees become defining elements within compositions shaped by negative space, natural light and atmospheric weather.
The black-and-white photographs emphasise structure, contrast and sculptural form, while the colour works retain the subdued greens, blues and earth tones characteristic of Madeira’s forests and Atlantic coastline. Together, the photographs present a minimalist interpretation of the island centred on stillness, balance and the relationship between land, vegetation, sea and sky.
