ANCIENT LAUREL CLOUD FOREST STUDY 1 – PORTUGAL | GERALD BERGHAMMER
Ancient Laurel Cloud Forest Study 1 is a black-and-white fine art photograph by Austrian photographer Gerald Berghammer, capturing ancient laurel trees emerging from the mist in a cloud forest in Portugal. The composition centres on a distinctive, curved tree whose dark branches and sculptural foliage contrast with the soft, diffused light. In the background, a weathered, leafless tree gradually disappears into the fog, while fallen branches and the textured forest floor introduce a subtle sense of depth. The carefully balanced monochrome tones emphasise the interplay of organic forms, light and negative space, creating an atmosphere of stillness and quiet mystery.
Photographed in 2023, the work reflects Berghammer's minimalist approach to black-and-white landscape photography. Through precise composition and refined tonal transitions, the ancient woodland becomes a contemplative study of nature, time and silence. The interplay between sculptural trees and atmospheric light gives the photograph a timeless quality, inviting the viewer to explore the delicate relationship between presence and absence.
This exhibited fine art photograph was printed in 2024 using archival pigment inks and is presented in a matt-black aluminium frame with a natural-white archival mount and anti-reflective glass offering 70% UV protection. Numbered 1/7, signed and dated, the artwork comes ready to hang and includes a Certificate of Authenticity.
