THE CLIFFS OF ÉTRETAT STUDY 4 – FRANCE | GERALD BERGHAMMER
The Cliffs of Étretat Study 4 is a black-and-white fine art photograph by Austrian photographer Gerald Berghammer, capturing the dramatic chalk cliffs and natural sea arch along the Normandy coastline in France. The composition centres on a monumental rock formation rising from the sea, its distinctive arch creating a striking interplay of geological structure, light and negative space. The long exposure transforms the surrounding water into a smooth, luminous surface, contrasting with the sharply defined textures of the limestone cliffs. Restrained monochrome tones and a carefully balanced composition emphasise the landscape's sculptural character and timeless atmosphere.
Photographed in 2023, the work reflects Berghammer's minimalist approach to seascape photography. By reducing the movement of the sea and emphasising the essential forms of the coastal landscape, the photograph becomes a contemplative study of permanence, natural beauty and stillness.
This exhibited archival pigment ink print was produced in 2024 and is presented in a matt-black aluminium frame with a natural-white archival mount and anti-reflective glass offering 70% UV protection. Signed, numbered and dated, the artwork includes a Certificate of Authenticity and comes ready to hang.
