ANCIENT LAURISILVA FOREST STUDY 7 – MADEIRA, PORTUGAL | GERALD BERGHAMMER
Ancient Laurisilva Forest Study 7 is a black-and-white fine art photograph by Austrian photographer Gerald Berghammer, capturing an ancient laurel tree emerging from dense mist in Madeira's Laurisilva forest, Portugal. The composition centres on a weathered laurel tree whose substantial trunk and intricate network of twisting branches form a striking sculptural silhouette. Smaller trees gradually recede into the surrounding mist, while textured bark, delicate foliage and diffused woodland light introduce subtle layers of depth. The restrained monochrome tones and soft atmospheric transitions emphasise the contrast between the dark, organic structures and luminous background, creating a quiet sense of isolation and permanence.
Photographed in 2021, the work reflects Berghammer's minimalist approach to landscape photography. Through its carefully balanced composition, expansive negative space and refined tonal contrasts, the photograph transforms the ancient woodland into a contemplative study of natural form, atmosphere and the passage of time.
This exhibited archival pigment ink print was produced in 2024 and is presented in a matt-black aluminium frame with a natural-white archival mount and anti-reflective glass offering 70% UV protection. Numbered 1/7, signed and dated, the artwork comes ready to hang.
