REDWOOD STUDY 2 – CALIFORNIA, USA | GERALD BERGHAMMER
Redwood Study 2 is a black-and-white fine art photograph by Austrian photographer Gerald Berghammer, capturing the towering redwood trees of a mist-filled forest in California, USA. The composition reveals the majestic beauty of this ancient woodland landscape, where monumental tree trunks emerge from the soft, atmospheric surroundings. An immense redwood tree dominates the foreground, its richly textured bark and powerful vertical form contrasting with the luminous mist enveloping the forest. A small wooden footbridge crosses the rocky woodland floor, introducing a subtle architectural element and providing a sense of scale against the towering trees. Restrained monochrome tones, delicate tonal transitions and gradually fading silhouettes create a carefully balanced interplay of natural forms, texture and atmospheric depth, lending the scene a timeless, contemplative quality.
Photographed in 2015 and printed in 2019 as a traditional gelatin silver print on baryta paper, the work reflects Berghammer's minimalist approach to landscape photography, emphasising the sculptural presence of natural forms, precise tonal control and the evocative relationship between light, texture and atmosphere. Through careful composition and visual reduction, the Californian redwood forest becomes a contemplative study of nature, stillness and the passage of time.
This original print, Edition 4/20, has previously been exhibited and is offered as the existing physical artwork in its original presentation.
