THE DARK HEDGES STUDY 3 – IRELAND | GERALD BERGHAMMER
The Dark Hedges Study 3 is a black-and-white fine art photograph by Austrian photographer Gerald Berghammer, capturing the historic avenue of beech trees known as The Dark Hedges in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. The composition reveals the atmospheric beauty of this remarkable natural landmark, where centuries-old trees form a dramatic tunnel above a narrow country road.Twisted trunks and intertwining branches dominate the composition, their sculptural forms creating an intricate natural canopy that frames the road disappearing into the distance. Richly textured bark and delicate foliage contrast with the luminous opening beyond the trees, while the strong central perspective draws the viewer deeper into the scene. Restrained monochrome tones, subtle tonal transitions and carefully balanced light and shadow emphasise the architectural character of the woodland, lending the photograph a timeless, contemplative quality.
Photographed in 2014 and printed in 2019 as a traditional gelatin silver print on baryta paper, the work reflects Berghammer's dedication to analogue photographic craftsmanship, precise tonal control and minimalist visual expression. Through careful composition and visual reduction, the historic avenue becomes a contemplative study of natural form, perspective, atmosphere and the passage of time.
This original print, Edition 1/10, has previously been exhibited and is offered as the existing physical artwork in its original presentation. Signed, numbered and dated, the photograph is housed in a dark-brown wooden frame with a natural-white archival mount and anti-reflective glass offering 70% UV protection. The framed work is ready to hang and is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity. Available through the SILVERFINEART Exhibited Art collection, it offers collectors the opportunity to acquire an original exhibited artwork in its existing framed condition.
