DEER IN FOGGY FOREST STUDY 1 – PORTUGAL | GERALD BERGHAMMER
Deer in Foggy Forest Study 1 is a black-and-white fine art photograph by Austrian photographer Gerald Berghammer, capturing a solitary, wind-shaped laurel tree in the mist-covered Fanal Forest on Madeira, Portugal. The composition reveals the mysterious beauty of this ancient woodland, where an extraordinary natural form emerges from the dense fog against a soft, luminous background.A solitary laurel tree dominates the composition, its twisted trunk and sweeping branches forming a striking sculptural silhouette reminiscent of a deer. The dark, richly textured bark contrasts with the surrounding mist, while the tree's distinctive shape creates an almost surreal presence within the otherwise empty landscape. Restrained monochrome tones, subtle tonal transitions and generous negative space emphasise the delicate interplay of natural form and atmosphere, lending the photograph a timeless, contemplative quality.
Photographed in 2021 and printed in 2022 as an archival pigment ink print on Hahnemühle Photo Rag Baryta paper, the work reflects Berghammer's minimalist approach to landscape photography, emphasising sculptural natural forms, refined tonal gradations and the evocative relationship between light and atmosphere. Through careful visual reduction, Madeira's ancient Laurisilva forest becomes a contemplative study of nature, solitude and the passage of time.
